The Entertainment System is Down is a contemporary satire set on a long-haul flight where the entertainment system breaks down. As the passengers are left with nothing but their own thoughts – and each other – tensions rise, leading to unexpected and dramatic consequences. Through his satirical lens, Ruben Östlund examines human behavior and society’s growing dependence on constant distraction.

Securing distribution rights for The Entertainments System is Down marks the fifth collaboration between SF Studios and Ruben Östlund’s production company Plattform Produktion, which he co-founded in 2002 with producer Erik Hemmendorff. The previous collaborations include Involuntary (2008), Play (2011), Pleasure (2021) and Triangle of Sadness (2022).

In addition to directing, Ruben Östlund also wrote the screenplay for The Entertainment System is Down, which is produced by Plattform Produktion in partnership with Film i Väst, Sveriges Television, and SF Studios, with support from the Danish Film Institute and the Norwegian Film Institute, and others. A24 will handle distribution in the United States, while global sales are managed by Philippe Bober’s Coproduction Office.

Alongside Kirsten Dunst, Keanu Reeves, and Daniel Brühl in the leading roles, the star-studded ensemble cast also includes Samantha Morton (In America), Nicholas Braun (Succession), Vincent Lindon (Titane), Woody Harrelson (Triangle of Sadness), and Joel Edgerton (Animal Kingdom).
