SF Studios has officially launched production of The Closed Book, a new Danish historical drama directed by Charlotte Sieling (Margrete: Queen of the North, Way Home) and adapted from the acclaimed novel Den lukkede bog (The Closed Book) by Jette A. Kaarsbøl. The film stars Alba August (The Rain, Becoming Astrid) as Frederikke and Gustav Lindh (Queen of Hearts, The Northman) as Frederik.

Described as a powerful story about love, freedom, longing and the choices that shape a human life, the film centers on the young Frederikke, who is on the verge of entering a comfortable marriage with a priest when she encounters the charismatic doctor Frederik. The meeting sets her on a path that challenges both her identity and the expectations placed upon her.

Since its publication in 2003, The Closed Book has become one of Denmark’s most celebrated modern historical novels. According to publisher Gyldendal, the book ranks among the company’s most successful releases of recent decades.

Director Charlotte Sieling has reportedly wanted to adapt the novel for many years, envisioning the story as a cinematic exploration of love, identity and human vulnerability.

“What makes The Closed Book so compelling is how clearly the ideas and conflicts of its time still resonate today,” Sieling said. “Frederikke is a young woman searching for freedom and love on her own terms, a struggle that feels deeply familiar. It is a powerful, emotional story about longing, identity, and the choices that shape a life.”

The ensemble cast includes Clint Ruben (Bullshit, The Uniform) as Thomas Velin, Agnes Rase (Midsommar, Margrete: Queen of the North) as Amalie, and Mathilde Lundberg (Bullshit, Sonny Boy) as Helene. They are joined by Iben Hjejle, Ari Alexander and Ellen Hillingsø.

Celebrated actress Ghita Nørby portrays the older Frederikke. Additional cast members include Joachim Fjelstrup and Mathilde Eusebius as Georg and Gerda Brandes, while Andreas Dissing Hyttel appears as Herman Bang.

The film is produced by SF Studios Denmark, with producers Lars Bredo Rahbek and Mette Marie Munch-Petersen. Production is backed by the Danish Film Institute, Film i Väst, DR, Nordisk Film & TV Fond, MOIN Filmförderung and the Swedish Film Institute. International sales will be handled by Reinvent Yellow Sales.

The Closed Book is being filmed both in studio and on location in and around Copenhagen. The film is expected to premiere in Danish cinemas in late summer 2027.
