‘Doctor Glas’ Film Adaptation Boarded by SF Studios and REinvent

Doctor Glas (Doktor Glas)

Hjalmar Söderberg‘s iconic novel Doctor Glas (Doktor Glas) is being reimagined for the big screen with SF Studios and REinvent on board. The psychological thriller stars Thea Sofie Loch Næss (The Last Kingdom), Isac Calmroth (The Ugly Stepsister), and Christian Fandango (Blackwater), and is slated to premiere in Swedish theatres on March 6, 2026.

Doctor Glas is directed by Erik Leijonborg (The Last Kingdom) and co-written with Isac Calmroth, who also plays one of the lead roles. The film is produced by Triangledrama and Unlimited Stories, the producer of Eagles of the Republic, Sweden’s Oscar submission this year. SF Studios will handle distribution in the Nordics, while REinvent oversees international sales.

“For me, this film is a dream come true. To work with people you feel safe with and truly like, while at the same time giving new life to such a beloved story, is a gift.”

Synopsis

Gabriel Glas (Calmroth) is a young, lonely doctor who despises the superficial ideals of his time but secretly longs to be part of something greater. When Helga Gregorius (Loch Næss), a celebrated and enigmatic fashion designer, steps into Glas’s practice, his world is turned upside down. Behind her perfect façade, she is a prisoner in her marriage to the award-winning author Patrik Gregorius (Fandango).

Gabriel sees his calling: to rescue Helga from Patrik’s grip. Soon they are caught in a web of lies, desire, and power games. The deeper Gabriel is drawn into his relationship with Helga, the more moral boundaries he crosses. As morals and limits blur, only one question remains:

Who is truly the monster – Patrik, Helga, or Gabriel himself?

“With this, my dream project is coming to life. This is a story that really captures what it means to be human today. A film about surface and success, but also about the cracks beneath. It is a psychological thriller, but rooted in a realistic, contemporary, and raw drama”.

Co-production partners for Doctor Glas include SF Studios, Leijonborg Film & TV, and SVT, with support from the Swedish Film Institute through film commissioner Andrea Östlund.

“After all the films I have produced, it is an adventure to take on Doctor Glas – one of Sweden’s greatest novels. With Leijonborg as director and these talented actors, we will create a new classic from an iconic book, a film that will draw people of all ages to the cinemas”.
