The final installment in Swedish director Tarik Saleh‘s (‘Boy from Heaven’) Cairo trilogy, ‘Eagles of the Republic‘, is currently in production, with filming expected to wrap up by July 13th. Following the success of his previous films ‘Cairo Conspiracy‘ aka ‘Boy from Heaven‘ (Best Screenplay, Cannes 2022) and ‘The Nile Hilton Incident‘ (Grand Jury Prize award, Sundance 2017), expectations are high for Tarik Saleh’s closing chapter of his film trilogy. Beyond directing the film, he has also written the screenplay.
The Cast
‘Eagles of the Republic’ features a strong international cast, including award-winning Swedish actor Fares Fares (‘Boy from Heaven’) starring in the leading role as George Fahmy, French star actress Lyna Khoudri (‘The French Dispatch’) as George’s girlfriend Donya, American-Palestinian actress and director/writer Cherien Dabis (‘Fallout’), French-Moroccan actress Zineb Triki (‘The Bureau’), and Finnish-Syrian actor Sherwan Haji (‘Boy from Heaven’), among others.
Egypt’s most adored actor, George Fahmy (Fares Fares) is pressured to star in a film commissioned by the highest authorities. He reluctantly accepts the role and finds himself thrown into the inner circle of power. Like a moth drawn to the flames he begins an affair with the mysterious wife of the general overseeing the film.
Composer
In addition to the international star cast, the acclaimed French film composer and two-time Academy Award winner Alexandre Desplat will compose the music for ‘Eagles of the Republic’. Desplat, having won the prestigious awards for Best Original Score for ‘The Shape of Water‘ in 2018, and ‘Grand Budapest‘ in 2015, among several other accolades, undoubtedly brings solid musical expertise to the project.

His first feature film, ‘Metropia’, was a dystopian animation released in 2009. Saleh’s film ‘The Nile Hilton Incident’ (2017) received ‘The Grand Jury Prize’ at Sundance, and in 2022 he won an award at the Cannes Film Festival for ‘Best Screenplay’ for ‘Cairo Conspiracy’ aka ‘Boy from Heaven’. He has also directed other projects, including ‘The Contractor’, episodes of the futuristic HBO-series ‘Westworld’, ‘Ray Donavon’ for Showtime, and several documentaries. Saleh is also known for his music video collaboration with Swedish singer Lykke Li.

SF Studios will distribute the film across the Nordics, with a theatrical release scheduled for fall 2025. French distribution will be managed by Memento Distribution, with international sales handled by Playtime.
