Ingmar Bergman New Swedish Film

SF Studios Announces New Film on Ingmar Bergman

A new feature film about the famous Swedish director and auteur Ingmar Bergman is currently in development by SF Studios in collaboration with Beret Film.

Bergman, who passed away in 2007, is widely regarded as one of the most significant filmmakers of all time, with a profound influence on the global film industry and filmmakers worldwide. He left behind a legacy of iconic works like ‘The Seventh Seal‘, ‘Persona‘, and ‘Fanny and Alexander‘, among others.

The film will feature esteemed Swedish actor/comedian Robert Gustafsson portraying Bergman. Gustafsson is notably known for his work as a comedian, as well as his role as Allan Karlsson in the Oscar-nominated film ‘The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared‘. The principal shooting of the yet-untitled film is scheduled for 2025, and the project is presented at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

SF Studios has acquired the Nordic distribution rights to the political thriller, which takes place in Sweden in 1976 during the infamous ‘Bergman Affair’. This was a particularly challenging time in Bergman’s life, facing a personal and professional crisis after being arrested on suspicion of tax fraud. It all happened while Bergman received receptions for his Strindberg play, ‘The Dance of Death‘, at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm.

The ‘Bergman Affair’ received significant attention both nationally and internationally, and the pressure of the situation ultimately led to a mental breakdown for Ingmar Bergman.

“The so-called ‘Bergman affair’ had far-reaching political consequences and contributed during the election year of 1976 to the Social Democratic Party losing power after over forty years. This was a different Sweden than today, with a self-image of decency and honesty, where well-known political figures and the cultural elite were symbiotic until the bomb about Bergman’s tax affairs exploded. The news of the Swedish police’s arrest of the world-renowned film director became an international news sensation that shook the Swedish establishment to its core”

Eric Broberg, Producer and Screenwriter at Beret Film

In addition to his acting role, Robert Gustafsson is also a writer and producer for the new Bergman film, partnering with Henrik Jansson-Schweizer and Eric Broberg. This marks the return of the writer-producer team behind the Swedish film success ‘The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared‘, and its sequel, seen by more than 2,2 million people in Sweden. It also marks the first film under the banner of their newly formed production company, Beret Film.

“We’re not very good at telling our own story as a nation in Sweden—about who we were and what has shaped us. The events of that time, when the welfare state burst in its own excellence and a world-renowned cultural figure became as vulnerable as a thief in jail, make for a surprisingly suspenseful and captivating tale. We’re excited to share this historical gem with the moviegoing public”.
