‘The Åre Murders’: Netflix’s No. 1 Global Crime Series

'The Åre Murders' Netflix No. 1 Global Non-English Show

With an impressive 8.8 million views in its debut week on Netflix following its release on February 6, 2025, the Swedish crime series The Åre Murders (Åremorden) has become the most-watched non-English show on the streaming platform, claiming the No. 1 spot on the global charts.

Based on the bestselling books Hidden in Snow and Hidden in the Shadows by Swedish writer and lawyer Viveca Sten (author of The Sandhamn Murders series), the series stars Carla Sehn (Love & Anarchy, Sjukt) and Kardo Razzazi (The Abyss, Rheingold) in lead roles, alongside main actors Charlie Gustafsson, Francisco Sobrado, Amalia Holm, Frida Argento, Agnes Kittelsen, Jon Øigarden, Robin Stegmar, Olle Sarri, Samuel Astor, and Moa Gammel.

The Åre Murders has received high praise, with critics highlighting strong performances by the lead actors, the atmospheric setting in a snow-covered Swedish resort town, and its examination of complex issues such as domestic abuse and small-town secrets.

The series explores themes of resilience, trust, and human vulnerability as suspended police officer Hanna Ahlander finds herself drawn into a chilling missing-person case while staying at her sister’s vacation home in Åre.

Watch the official trailer for The Åre Murders:

“The Åre Murders means a lot to me and I’m very excited that it’s now time for the TV series to see the light of day on a leading streaming service like Netflix! Both as the author of the books and executive producer of the series, it’s hugely exciting to see the characters come to life through such talented actors. My dream, of course, is that the TV series will be just as popular and successful as the books have been both in Sweden and abroad.”

The Story

Police officer Hanna Ahlander has been suspended from her job in Stockholm and dumped by her partner when she moves to her sister’s vacation home in Åre. When a young woman goes missing on the icy night of Lucia, Hanna can’t help but start investigating the case. With a difficult family situation and an understaffed police station, local police officer Daniel Lindskog reluctantly accepts Hanna’s help. But the big question is whether they can trust each other.
