Based on the nonfiction book The Breakthrough: How the Genealogist Solved the Double Murder in Linköping (Genombrottet: Så löste släktforskaren dubbelmordet i Linköping), written by Anna Bodin and Peter Sjölund, Netflix has announced the release of the Swedish four-part true crime mini-series The Breakthrough (Genombrottet). The series is set to debut globally on the streaming platform on January 7, 2025.
“We’re excited that FLX and Netflix will tell this story, based on our extensive work. This is the first criminal case in Europe that has been solved with genetic genealogy, and it is a case that has touched both of us, the city of Linköping and Sweden deeply.”
Anna Bodin and Peter Sjölund, book authors
The Breakthrough stars Peter Eggers (Snabba Cash seasons 1 & 2) and Mattias Nordkvist (Deliver Me), as the police officer and genealogist, respectively, following the investigation of Sweden’s second-largest murder investigation to date. After 16 years of investigating, the double murder in Linköping, a city in Southern Sweden, was finally solved in 2004 by a genealogist. This marked the first time a murder was solved by genealogical research in Europe.

Synopsis
When a shocking double homicide goes unsolved for 16 years, a detective teams up with a genealogist to catch the killer before it becomes a cold case.
The series is penned by Oskar Söderlund (Snabba Cash, The Dark Heart) and directed by Lisa Siwe (Glowing Stars, Modus). Stockholm-based production company FLX, co-founded by Felix Herngren and Pontus Edgren, and the producer of Netflix’s first Swedish original series Quicksand (2019), has produced TheBreakthrough for Netflix. Producer for FLX is Lejla Bešić, and Elin Kvist serves as executive producer for The Breakthrough.
Peter Eggers in The Breakthrough
“Though this is a fictional drama series about a crime, it is above all a depiction of a human tragedy, where we place our focus on the victims and the investigation rather than the perpetrator. It’s a story about the compassion and care for one another that is needed to move on when terrible things happen. In our series, we follow the two main protagonists as they search for the answer that all the other characters are looking for – by working with two completely different methods. The genealogist moves backwards in time to find clues in church records and family trees, and the police officer moves forward in his search for the next trace of the perpetrator.”
Lisa Siwe, director
