New Danish Crime Drama ‘Graverne’ (The Diggers) Explores Investigative Journalism

Created by Jenny Lund Madsen (‘Meter i sekundet’), the new six-part Danish journalistic crime series ‘Graverne‘ (The Diggers) explores the high-stakes world of investigative journalism and the challenges the journalists encounter as the watchdogs of democracy. It is set to premiere on TV 2 Play and TV 2 in Denmark in late July, 2024.

‘Graverne’ stars acclaimed actress Mille Dinesen (‘Rita’) in the lead role of Liv. In addition to Dinesen, the ensemble cast features actors Afshin Firouzi, Søren Malling, Lila Nobel, Clint Ruben, Johanne Milland, and Kenny Duerlund. The series also boasts an additional notable cast, including Tina Gylling, Filippa Suenson, Kasper Leisner, Michael Asmussen, Jeppe Wahlstrøm, Katrine Greis-Rosenthal, and more.

Synopsis

A team of award-winning investigative journalists, including the idealistic founder Liv, the uncompromising reporter Alice, and the seasoned journalist Hansen, receive an anonymous tip about a new high-tech prison, Gaudehøj, that is hiding dark secrets. The team also includes an intern, Frederik, and a photographer, Chris. They risk their personal safety and relationships to uncover the truth, even going so far as to plant a mole, Hansen’s son Mathias, inside the prison. As they dig deeper, they realize the corruption extends to the highest levels of the political system. The journalists must decide how far they are willing to go to expose the inhumane conditions and bring the story to light, knowing that the personal consequences could be severe.

The series is helmed by Danish director Jesper W. Nielsen (‘Borgen’, Those Who Kill’) and produced by Nordisk Film Series. Producers Camilla Hammerich and Trin Hjortkjær Thomsen lead the production, which is supported by Public Service Puljen. David C. H. Østerbøg serves as the executive producer for TV 2.

“The investigative editorial team is a fascinating arena, and the journalistic work is important on TV 2 and in our society. Screenwriter Jenny Lund Madsen and the talented team behind the series focus on a current and relevant topic: the role of news media in an informed democracy. The story delves into a dark case that should not be possible in today’s Denmark and follows the journalistic investigation. It highlights the dilemmas that arise when right and wrong are blurred by conflicting interests, and how these affect the protagonists’ private lives. I hope that ‘Graverne’ will raise awareness about the significance of journalism for the public discourse in our society.”

‘Graverne’ will debut on TV 2 Play on Sunday, July 28, and on TV 2 on Monday, July 29.
