The Danish Film Institute has announced that Tine Fischer will follow Claus Ladegaard as the new director of the institute from August 1, 2024.

Ladegaard has been at the Film Institute for the past 18 years, including 7 years as a managing director. The appointment of Fischer as his successor was unanimously decided by a committee. Having served as the principal of the National Film School of Denmark since 2021, Tine Fischer brings a wealth of experience to her new role. Prior to this, she was the founder and former managing director of the esteemed CPH:DOX festival.

“I am proud and grateful that the choice fell on me as the director, who together with the film industry and talented employees, will lead the Danish Film Institute into a new era. For many years, Danish film has had a completely unique position both at home and abroad out in the world. We bring home awards from international festivals and gather a whole nation about Danish films. Today we stand with a strong film industry and a completely unique growth layer. The reality is that the digital media have changed both audience and market. That’s why we need a clear, visionary, and unifying Film Institute. A modern cultural institution that sets agendas and, not least, delivers the knowledge and innovation that is crucial for the future of Danish film.”

“With Tine, the Film Institute gets a visionary and strategically strong leader with in-depth knowledge of the reality and challenges of the film and media industry and experience with what it takes to develop strong, culture-bearing organizations. Our ambition for the future is to strengthen cohesion both internally and externally. We must make the Film Institute the powerhouse and attractive gathering point for Danish film, which it has the potential to be for the industry, citizens, and employees with preservation, dissemination, and development. We are very much looking forward to welcoming Tine.”

When asked about her motivation for taking on the new position, here’s what Tine Fischer had to say:

“There is possibly only one institution in Danish film that can collect, develop, and drive the major change agendas. The Film Institute should be that institution. I have now been at the Film School for three years. It is a very special place that I carry with me forever. For me, the transition to the Film Institute is a natural extension. I fundamentally believe that the films we support will never be better than the talent that will run the business. The Film Institute has a big and important role in all of them not least as an active player in relation to the huge potential that lies in wait for the new generations. We must be curious and listen and make room for the innovation and diversity that is crucial for the future of Danish film.”
