New Danish Series About Queen Margrethe 2.

Following last week’s news about the abdication of Queen Margrethe of Denmark, the Danish production house SAM Productions, owned by ‘Borgen‘ creator Adam Price, announced today that they have started developing a new fiction series about Queen Margrethe of Denmark in collaboration with TV 2 Denmark. The working title is ‘Af Guds nåde‘ (translated: By the Grace of God), and the series is expected to start shooting sometime in 2025.

The story starts in 1940 and revolves around life at Amalienborg Palace, following both the members of the royal family and their employees, in good and bad times. The focus of the series is the young girl and princess, Margrethe, who became the Queen of Denmark already as a teenager, and the challenges she and her family faced in this important chapter of Danish history.

“With her 83 years, the Queen has been part of the history of all Danes. Regardless of whether you are a royalist or not, and regardless of how you twist and turn it, she holds significance for us as a people, both in our little duck pond and also out in the world. It was not in the cards for the little princess to be queen, but times changed, and she became a great queen. Now is the time to tell the magnificent story, which can give us an insight we have not had before.”

‘Af Guds nåde’ is an important story about all of us Danes, told with a starting point in the Danish royal house and with Margrethe as the focal point of the story. It is the story of a family, of an institution, and of an anachronism that struggles to maintain its relevance in the modern age. The royal house is something that all Danes share, regardless of whether you are a supporter, an opponent, or just somewhere in between. And it is still a rallying point for the Danes. It is TV 2’s hope that the series can contribute to a greater understanding of the royal house’s importance to who we are as Danes, and how the social development has spread in both ways.

Thor Bjørn Krebs (’Friheden’ 1 & 2, ’Om Baronessen – Blixens sidste Kærlighed’) is the main writer for ‘Af Guds nåde’, and it is based on an idéa by Søren Sveistrup (‘Kastanjemanden’, ‘Forbrydelsen’). Sara Namer (‘Orkestret’, ‘Friheden 2’) will produce the series that has been in development for the last one and half years in collaboration with Senior Executive Producer at TV 2 Denmark, Pernille Bech Christiansen and Public Service Puljen at the Danish Film Institute.

SAM Productions has created series like ‘Borgen’, ‘Merkur’, ‘Ragnarok’, ‘Sygepleiersken’, and ‘Kastanjemanden’, among others. The production company was established in 2014 by Adam Price, Søren Sveistrup, Meta Louise Foldager Sørensen, and Studio Canal.
