Following his Academy Award-nominated screenplays for The Worst Person in the World and Sentimental Value, longtime Joachim Trier collaborator Eskil Vogt returns to the director’s chair with Untitled (Uten tittel), a psychological thriller about art, power, and the unsettling boundaries between memory and truth.
The film marks Vogt’s third feature as a director, following Blind (2014) and The Innocents (2021), and his first English-language feature. Produced by Maria Ekerhovd and Lars Thomas Skare for the Norwegian production company Mer Film, Untitled is scheduled for a theatrical release in the third quarter of 2028.
The project recently secured a crucial NOK 10 million (approximately $1 million) production grant from the Norwegian Film Institute (NFI), for a total budget of NOK 109.7 million (approximately $11 million). The film had previously received a total of NOK 700,000 in NFI development funding, awarded in three installments between 2022 and February 2026.
The production funding followed an earlier rejection by NFI, after the filmmakers requested a new and independent assessment of the application following the institute’s first funding round of 2026. The application was subsequently reassessed under NFI’s new case-handling practice and awarded NOK 10 million in production funding.
The decision followed considerable attention and debate within Norway’s film industry over NFI’s funding process. However, it is important to note that the change in NFI’s assessment procedure was not introduced because of Vogt’s project. According to NFI, the revised practice followed decisions by the Media Complaints Board, with Untitled becoming the first project to receive a new assessment under the changed procedure.

Vogt is a filmmaker with a clear artistic voice and a strong international profile, now further developing his work with his third feature film as director. Enabling filmmakers to develop substantial bodies of work over time is part of the Creator Initiative, a key element of the Norwegian Film Institute’s new strategy.”

The film’s official description is deliberately brief, but NFI film consultant Nanna Mailand-Mercado provides some additional insight, describing the screenplay as well-written and driven by a clear creative vision. She highlights Vogt’s recurring interest in family, memory, identity and the traces of the past in human relationships, while noting that the project combines an intimate character drama with thriller elements.
According to Mailand-Mercado, the story is driven by growing uncertainty around memories, motives and perceptions of reality, while using thriller conventions to explore themes including ageing, guilt and artistic uncompromisingness.
The new film reunites Vogt with producer Maria Ekerhovd, who previously produced his The Innocents for Mer Film. Ekerhovd was also one of the producers of Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value, written by Trier and Vogt.
