Inspired by real events, the new Swedish period drama The New Force (Skiftet) is set for a global release on Netflix on October 3, 2025. The series takes place in the 1950’s in Sweden and follows the nation’s first female police officers as they graduate and begin their careers in Stockholm’s Klara police district, the country’s most crime-ridden area.
The year is 1958, and Sweden’s first female police officers graduate; a small group of pioneers taking a big step for gender equality but struggling to take even the smallest step themselves, as the skirts they’re forced to wear chafe like sandpaper against their thighs. They are ridiculed by the public, belittled by the media, and scorned by their colleagues. The new recruits are placed in the country’s most crime-ridden district; the Klara police district in Stockholm, and as they start patrolling the streets of Stockholm, they soon realize that their biggest problem isn’t the criminals; instead, the resistance comes from colleagues and the society as a whole.

The main cast of The New Force features Josefin Asplund (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) as Karin, Agnes Rase (Midsommar) as Siv, and Malin Persson (My Future Love) as Ingrid, portraying Sweden’s first female police recruits in 1958. The additional ensemble cast includes Christopher Wagelin (Shame on Dry Land), Hannes Fohlin (The Restaurant), Rasmus Luthander (Let the Right One In), Jimmy Lindström (Blue Eyes), Cilla Thorell (The Most Forbidden), Pablo Leiva Wenger (The Helicopter Heist), Peter Eriksson (We Are the Best!), among others.

Production
The New Force was created by Patrik Ehrnst and Rojda Sekersöz, with Ehrnst serving as head writer alongside scriptwriters Antonia Pyk and Elin Randin. The story was developed by Ehrnst, Randin, and Per Gavatin. Rojda Sekersöz, also the conceptual director, is joined by Julia Lindström in directing the series. Cecilia Forsberg Becker produces, with Annika Rogell and Jan Blomgren as executive producers. The series is brought to life by Stockolm based powerhouse Art & Bob.
