Pia Tjelta and Per Kjerstad in State of Happiness

The successful drama series about the Norwegian oil adventure, State of Happiness (original title: Lykkeland) has reached its anticipated third and final season. The series has been sold to around 50 countries, and has won multiple awards, including Canneseries and Gullruten, and is now set for its Norwegian premiere on October 26 on NRK TV and October 27 on NRK1.

About the final season

Back in the oil city of Stavanger, we meet the characters from last season again, along with some new faces. Seven years have passed since the Alexander Kielland disaster, which concluded season 2 of State of Happiness, and the industry has undergone many changes, with new start-ups appearing.

The eight new episodes of the third season take us back to the late 80s, to revisit a period when the oil was flowing steadily in Norway, the shoulder pads were broad, the hair was high, and there was lots of partying. Some became extremely wealthy on oil in this period, while others crash-landed and lost everything.

Anna (Anne Regine Ellingsæter) has become a widow and the mother of twins. She leaves her safe position in the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate for a job in the tech company of the charismatic engineer Sture (Herman Flesvig). Her brother Rein (Ole Christoffer Ertvaag), an oil worker, eventually also joins the project.

Meanwhile, her husband, Christian (Paal Herman Ims), is worried about his fellow divers. Some of them are starting to show signs of serious tendon damage after deep dives.

At the same time, Nyman Rederier is moving towards a generational change. But is Christian ready to take over from his father, Fredrik (Per Kjerstad)? Christian’s mother, Ingrid (Pia Tjelta), would also like to have a hand in the game when the future of the family business is to be decided.
