Mads Mikkelsen and Kim Bodnia in 'Pusher'

The newly restored version of Nicolas Winding Refn‘s (‘Drive’) Danish cult classic ‘Pusher‘ (1996) starring Mads Mikkelsen and Kim Bodnia will make its world debut at the 81st Venice International Film Festival. The festival runs from 28 August to 7 September, 2024, and the film will compete in the ‘Venice Classics Competition Restored Films‘ section.

The film boasts an impressive cast including acclaimed Danish actors Mads Mikkelsen (‘The Promised Land’, ‘Another Round’), Kim Bodnia (‘The Bridge’, ‘The Witcher’), Zlatko Buric (‘Triangle of Sadness’), and Laura Drasbæk (‘The Killing’).

“28 years after Nicolas Winding Refn’s debut hit the world, we are really excited to have the world premiere of the restored Pusher movie in Venice Classics. The perfect way of re-introducing this cult trilogy to the fans.

‘Pusher’ premiered at Toronto Film Festival in 1996. It was also screened at Cannes Critics’ Week and London Film Festival, receiving considerable acclaim for its unwavering realism and gripping storytelling depicting Copenhagen’s gritty underworld. The film was an international breakthrough for Winding Refn and is the first installment of a trilogy followed by ‘Pusher II’ (2004) and ‘Pusher III’ (2005).

Nicolas Winding Refn has been nominated for the Cannes Palme d’Or for ‘The Neon Demon’ (2016) and ‘Only God Forgives’ (2013). He also received an Academy Award®-nomination for ‘Drive’ (2011) and won the award for ‘Best Director’ at the Cannes International Film Festival for the same film.

The entire trilogy has undergone a careful restoration, ensuring the highest quality release for both new audiences and longtime fans alike. The restoration was carried out by Nordisk Film Shortcut, and it was overseen and approved by director Nicolas Winding Refn and photographer Morten Søborg. TrustNordisk oversees international distribution of ‘Pusher’, with the exception of Italy, where Movies Inspired handles distribution, while Nordisk Film Distribution manages local distribution.
