Film i Väst has announced that the much beloved Swedish story ‘Tordyveln flyger i skymningen’ (translated to English as ‘The Dung Beetle Flies at Dusk’), a classic family adventure by Maria Gripes and Kay Pollak, is set to start filming in May 2024. The filming location will be in Västra Götaland, Sweden.
The series will be starring acclaimed Swedish actors Tomas von Brömssen, Pernilla August, Lena Endre, and Dag Malmberg, and the youth cast for ‘Tordyveln flyger i skymningen’ is Hjalmar Löfmark Yilmaz, Moa Nåsander and Einar Alvarado Lönberg.
The story takes place in a small town called Ringarvd in Småland during hot and long summer days in 1976. The three youths David, Annika, and Jonas get involved in a mystery surrounding a 3000-year-old Egyptian statue that has been hidden for a long time. It turns out that the statue is cursed and that coincidences in the past have big consequences here and now.
Originally created as a radio serial by Gripes and Pollak, the story was later published as a novel by Maria Gripes. The book won many prizes and became a classic in Swedish literature and it was also adapted for radio theatre in Norway, which became immensely popular.
Tordyveln flyger i skymningen’ has engaged me since I was 10 years old, listening to the radio series on our car trips through Sweden with my family. It had its own atmosphere, and there’s something timeless and distinctly Nordic about the story. Finally, we will bring this fantastic tale to life as a grand series for the whole family.
Atle Knudsen, Director
Listening to it as a kid driving through Sweden on a vacation with his family, the Norwegian director Atle Knudsen (‘Etterglød’, ‘Zombie-Lars’) has had a long and loving relationship with this story.

“It is with great joy that we “press the button” for Tordyveln flies in the twilight, and we are very much looking forward to when this classic will meet new generations of audiences. The fact that the project has attached a very fine cast, with for example Tomas von Brömssen in the role of the priest Lindroth, makes us confident in the high quality of the project.”
Anna Croneman, Head of Drama at SVT
The TV series is written by Ditta Bongehielm (‘Bonusfamilien’,’ Höök’) and Lovisa Milles (‘Jordskott’, Vår tid är nu’). It is produced by Nordic Drama Queens in co-production with SVT, Film i Väst, Monster AS, and TV2 Norge, and collaboration with DR and Fifth Season.
