Thomas Vinterberg’s New Drama Series ‘Families Like Ours’ Set for World Premiere at the Venice Film Festival

After the success of his Oscar-winning film ‘Another Round‘ (‘Druk’), celebrated Academy Award and BAFTA-winning Danish director Thomas Vinterberg is ready to debut his first TV drama series, Families Like Ours (original title: ‘Familier som vores’), at the prestigious 81st Venice International Film Festival 2024. The series will have its global premiere in the ‘Official Selection – Out of Competition’ section at the festival, before its domestic release on TV 2 and TV2PLAY in Denmark later this autumn. The festival runs from August 28 to September 7.

This marks Vinterberg’s debut at the Venice Film Festival, and it is also the third year in a row that Zentropa has one of its titles selected for the festival. Last time with Nikolaj Arcel‘s ‘The Promised Land‘ in 2023, and ‘The Kingdom Exodus‘ by Lars von Trier in 2022.

“I am proud and delighted. The Venice Film Festival is the perfect place for ‘Families Like Ours’ to meet the world. After ‘Another Round’ (‘Druk’), I dove straight into this character-driven saga about families who must leave their homeland before all of Denmark is flooded. The water in the streets of Venice therefore provides a particularly powerful frame for the world premiere. There is also something inspiringly defiant about a festival in a city built on water, which really reflects the series’ grand theme: indomitability. Humans have a fantastic ability to adapt, even in the most challenging situations. I experience both a dignity and a hope in precisely that indomitability, which I try to hold on to – especially in these disquieting times we live in.”

Synopsis

‘Families Like Ours’ begins in the middle of the Danish summer, when life is going as usual. But like a bolt from a clear sky, everything is torn apart. The rising water level can no longer be ignored, and the government decides that the entire country of Denmark must be evacuated. All properties suddenly become worthless, and houses and institutions are left abandoned, while families, friends, and lovers are forced in different directions.

Those who can afford it travel to wealthy countries, while the less well-off depend on the state-funded program and have to move where there is space. Chaos, division, and helplessness knock on the doors of the Danes. But despite the farewell to the homeland, the world still turns. In many places, love also blossoms, people reconcile, and the hope of being reunited lives on.

‘Families Like Ours’ is a grand and intimate family drama about the farewell to our country and all that we know, and about people’s indomitable will to survive, hope, and love.
