Selected to compete for the prestigious Palme d’Or, the Danish Cannes contender ‘The Girl with the Needle‘ (original title: ‘Pigen med nålen’) has its world premiere today (May 15th) at the Cannes Film Festival 2024.
Starring acclaimed Danish actresses Vic Carmen Sonne (‘Godland’, ‘Holiday’) and Trine Dyrholm (‘Queen of Hearts’, ‘In a Better World’), the dark drama shot in black and white is loosely inspired by a true story involving the Danish serial killer Dagmar Overbye, with a disturbing narrative of a woman in search of love and morality.
Helmed by Swedish director Magnus von Horn (‘Sweat’, ‘The Here After’), now living in Poland, this is the third encounter at the festival for the Gothenburg-born director, having made his Cannes debut in 2015 with his first feature, ‘The Here After’.
Other key members of the cast for ‘The Girl with the Needle’ include Besir Zeciri, Joachim Fjelstrup, Tessa Hoder, Benedikte Hansen, and Søren Sætter-Lassen.

Synopsis
Young factory worker Karoline struggles to survive in Copenhagen in the aftermath of World War 1. Unemployed, abandoned and pregnant, she meets Dagmar, a charismatic woman who runs an underground adoption agency where she helps mothers find foster families for their unwanted children. With nowhere else to go, Karoline takes on the role of a wet nurse and a strong connection between the two women develops. But Karoline’s world is shattered when she realizes the shocking truth…
“This is the first time in recent history that Nordisk Film has had a film in the main competition at Cannes, and we are very proud of that. It is a great recognition of director Magnus von Horn and everyone in front of and behind the camera who has created an artistically ambitious work. This is great for Danish film – we need encouragement and success. It’s already a victory to be in the running for the Palme d’Or, and now we’re looking forward to The Girl with the Needle meeting its world audience in Cannes.”
Katrine Vogelsang, CEO of Nordisk Film Production
Written by Magnus von Horn and Line Langebek, ‘The Girl with the Needle’ is produced by Nordisk Film Production in co-production with Lava Films and Nordisk Film Sverige. International sales are handled by The Match Factory.
